Tyler Monsein (b. 1991) is a composer in Los Angeles. Originally from Florida, he strove to become a writer before a chance encounter with ‘Hellraiser’ composer Christopher Young* encouraged him to devote himself to music. “He told me I had to choose between writing and music, and after showing him some scores I had written, he heavily encouraged me to choose music.”

Commercial scoring work for Expedia and Lincoln enabled him to release “Eight Weeks”, a two-song single for string quartet and voice (Orchid Quartet, Charlotte Traver). He follows that with a new work, a song cycle for girls choir, piano, viola and violin (MUSYCA Choir, Matthew Young, Gallia Kastner and Carson Rick). His patient, melody-centric music pulls equally from the sparse harmonies of Hindemith and Stravinsky, the understated theatricality of Noh theater, and the nostalgia of ABC Afterschool Specials. He hopes to use music to broaden his listeners’ horizons, but secretly he fears that nothing will ever be as popular as his 15 second score for Expedia

* Young’s score for ‘Haunted Summer’ is one of the greatest soundtracks of all time
